The best Gemini Storybook alternatives for kids (2026)

Why people look for a Gemini Storybook alternative

  • It isn't for children to use. Google says Storybook is for users over 18. It's made for a grown-up to create a book for a child, not for the child to use.
  • Every story goes one way. About 10 pages, start to finish. To change it, Gemini makes a whole new version, with all new pictures.
  • Characters can drift. Reviewers have noticed characters that look different from page to page, and the odd extra limb.
  • It's inside a general chatbot. That's handy if you already use Gemini, but with Keep Activity on, Google may use your activity to improve its services, including training its AI.

When to stick with Gemini Storybook

If you want a free book tonight, in one of 45+ languages, built around your own photos or your child's drawing, that you can print or save as a PDF, Gemini Storybook is hard to beat, and nothing below is free in the same way.

1. Branchlings ours

Best for
a story your child steers, with characters that stay themselves
Price
From $9.99/month; sample stories free to read, no free trial
What it does that Gemini doesn't
Made for kids to use with a grown-up; choices at every fork; characters painted from one model

This is ours. Your child dreams up the story, or picks where it happens and who comes along, then decides what happens at every fork, or taps My idea! and adds their own. Each story is written for their age, from picture books a grown-up reads aloud to chapter adventures for 12-year-olds.

Each character is painted once and used as the model for every page, so they stay themselves, and they come back for the next adventure. There's no chat, nothing public, and grown-ups set the words and topics to leave out.

What it won't do: work for free, build a story around your child's drawing, or speak anything but English. It's iPhone and iPad only, in the US, from $9.99 a month with no free trial.

2. Oscar Stories

Best for
cheap, personalized bedtime stories in your language
Price
$4.99/month or $39.99/year on iPhone; coin packs; first stories free
What it does that Gemini doesn't
A kids' story app with narration and story videos, on iPhone, Android and the web

Oscar Stories writes an illustrated bedtime story starring your child, with narration and animated story videos, in about ten languages. It costs $4.99 a month on iPhone, or you can buy stories with coins, and your first stories are free.

The catch: like Gemini, the story reads straight through, and you make the choices before it's written. Reviewers say the free allowance is small.

3. Night Night by StoryHero

Best for
a free library of narrated bedtime stories, made for children
Price
Free story library; Pro $6.99/month or $59.99/year; credit packs from $1.99
What it does that Gemini doesn't
Stories checked by a person before they're published, with a chapter starring your child

Night Night, from the team behind the former StoryHero app, is a library of narrated bedtime stories for ages 2 to 8, each written by an author or with AI and checked by a person before it's published. An AI-made chapter at the end stars your child, and you can record yourself reading the narration. The library is free; Pro is $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year.

The catch: it's brand new (July 2026, no ratings yet), English only, and apart from the last chapter the stories are the same for everyone.

4. Wonderbly

Best for
a printed keepsake, written and illustrated by people
Price
About $27–$75 a book, plus shipping
What it does that Gemini doesn't
A real book, by professional authors and illustrators, that you preview before you buy

If you liked the idea of a storybook starring your child but want it on paper, Wonderbly's personalized books are written and illustrated by professionals, and you see every page before you order.

The catch: about $27–$75 a book plus shipping, about a week and a half to a US door, and the same story every time.

5. StoryJumper

Best for
your child writing their own book, free
Price
Free to make books online; printed copies from $14.99
What it does that Gemini doesn't
Your child writes it, with art from its library or their own drawings, and can print it

StoryJumper is a free web tool where your child types their own story, builds the pages from its scenes and props (or uploads a photo of their drawings), and records themselves reading it. You can order a printed copy from $14.99.

The catch: it runs in a browser on a computer or iPad, there's no drawing tool inside it, and younger children need help with the typing.

Questions

Can kids use Gemini Storybook?
Not by themselves. Google says Storybook is for users over 18, and the Gemini app itself is for 13 and over (younger children only through a parent's Family Link account, and not in every country). It's meant for grown-ups making stories for children.
Is there a free alternative to Gemini Storybook?
Night Night by StoryHero has a free library of narrated bedtime stories, StoryJumper is free for your child to write their own books, and Oscar Stories gives you your first stories free. Branchlings has free sample stories, then plans from $9.99 a month.
Which Gemini Storybook alternative has choices in the story?
Branchlings is built around them: your child decides at every fork, or adds their own idea. Giant's interactive stories also have choices, and Moonbeam has an interactive mode.
Which alternative keeps characters looking the same?
Branchlings paints each character once and uses that painting as the model for every page, so they stay themselves from page to page and story to story. Printed books like Wonderbly's are drawn by illustrators, so they're consistent too.

Try Branchlings

Your child dreams up the story and picks what happens at every fork, and Branchlings writes and paints it. Free to download, with in-app purchases. You can read the sample stories before you choose a plan. Painting your character and new stories come with a plan. Plans start at $9.99 a month, and there's no free trial. For iPhone and iPad in the US.
