Branchlings vs Gemini Storybook (2026): a free book Google writes for you, or a story your child steers
Gemini Storybook is free, it's from Google, and for a one-off bedtime book it's genuinely good. It also isn't made for children to use, and every story goes one way. Here's the honest comparison, from the people who make the alternative.
| Compared | Branchlings | Gemini Storybook |
|---|---|---|
| Price | From $9.99/month (about 5 stories); free sample stories, no free trial | Free, with or without a Google AI plan |
| Who it's made for | Children, set up by a grown-up; each story written for the reader's age | Users 18 and over; Google pitches it at parents making stories for their kids |
| How the story goes | It branches: your child picks what happens at every fork, or types their own idea | One way, about 10 pages; to change it, Gemini makes a new version |
| Pictures | Every page painted; each character is painted once and used as the model for every page | Every page illustrated; reviewers report characters changing from page to page |
| Read aloud | An AI storyteller voice, with each word lighting up (always included at bedtime), or your own recorded voice on Plus and Pro | Yes, with a Listen button; narration in some languages |
| Your photos and drawings | A grown-up can paint a character from a photo (deleted within 7 days); no drawings or files | Yes: photos, drawings, PDFs and screenshots |
| Languages | English | 45+ |
| Where it runs | iPhone and iPad, in the US; Android coming soon | Web, Android, iPhone and iPad, wherever Gemini is available |
| Keeping stories | On your family's shelf, with next chapters and a story map | In your Gemini chats; print, save as PDF or share a public link |
| Your data and AI training | Never used to train AI; delete everything any time | With Keep Activity on, Google may use it to improve its services, including training AI |
The real difference is who's holding the pen
Put a Gemini storybook next to a Branchlings story and they look like cousins: painted pages, a story read aloud, a child somewhere in the middle of it. The difference is who decides what happens.
In Gemini Storybook, a grown-up writes a prompt and Gemini writes the whole book. If you want a different ending, you ask again and get a new version, with all-new pictures. In Branchlings, the story stops at each fork and your child decides: one of the painted choices, or their own idea, typed in with a grown-up. The story carries on from there.
What Gemini Storybook is genuinely better at
It's free. No plan, no credits, no subscription. If you want one story tonight and you're not sure you'll want another, that's hard to argue with.
It speaks your language. Gemini writes storybooks in 45+ languages. Branchlings is English only for now.
It uses your own pictures. Upload a photo, a page of your child's drawing or a screenshot, and Gemini builds a story around it. Branchlings can paint a character from a photo a grown-up adds, but not from drawings or files, and the story itself comes from your child's ideas.
It's everywhere. It runs on the web, Android, iPhone and iPad, and you can print a book, save it as a PDF or share a link. Branchlings is iPhone and iPad only, with Android coming.
What Branchlings is genuinely better at
It's made for children to use. Google's own rule is that Storybook is for users over 18, so a child can listen but can't make or steer a story. Branchlings is built around the child doing exactly that, inside an app a grown-up sets up, with no chat and nothing public.
The story branches. Two choices for the littlest listeners, more as they grow, and a "My idea!" button at every fork. Afterwards, the story map shows the path they took, with the paths they didn't take waiting behind a lock.
The characters stay themselves. Each character in Branchlings is painted once, and that painting is the model for every page, so your child's character looks like your child's character on page one and page twenty. It's AI, so it can still slip, but it's built for this. Reviewers of Gemini Storybook have pointed out characters that change from page to page.
Grown-ups stay in charge. A PIN for purchases and settings, words and topics to keep out of every story, how exciting stories get, and a calm bedtime mode that winds down to goodnight.
A note on age
Gemini itself is for ages 13 and up (younger children only through a parent-managed Family Link account, in some countries), and Storybook is for 18 and over. That's Google drawing a sensible line for a general-purpose chatbot. It does mean that with Gemini, the grown-up makes the story and the child listens. If that's what you want, it's a lovely free way to do it.
